Q: Should my family be involved with my rehab treatment?

The family’s role is essential in the recovery process. Years of addictive behavior greatly affect the family unit. Rehab facilities and treatment centers often offer a family program or week, usually lasting 3 to 5 days. Family members usually attend lectures and educational programs to better understand addiction and family dynamics. In addition, they might attend family sessions to explore their situation and focus on recovery and healing. This healing experience is very powerful because other recovering families participate in the process. It is essential that the entire family unit understands recovery and what is needed to heal the family unit. While supporting the patient in recovery, family members may want to find their own support, such as individual therapy, Al-Anon, Alateen, etc.
